A Note from the Rector

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On the Feast of St. James, Bishop Cox confirmed nine people. It was a great day. During the Confirmation class, I spoke of Confirmation being the laying on of hands for service. When each of us was confirmed, we acknowledged as an adult that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. At the same time, we stated in a public way that we were ready to serve Jesus in the same fashion. This affirmation brings to mind two passages of Scripture. The first is from First Peter, “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” To fulfill this admonition means that we must be constantly learning more about our faith, our condition and our God. Here at St. James, we offer many chances to grow and to learn. Several of these opportunities are listed in this edition of our newsletter. We must be vigilant in our faith. If our faith is not growing, then plainly, it is dead. If you are in the same place spiritually as the day you were confirmed, you need to evaluate your relationship with Jesus Christ. A stagnant relationship with Jesus Christ is no blessing to him, to us or to those around us. This leads to another important point. As we grow in our faith, we will want to serve Jesus in a more tangible way. In Ephesians 4, Paul wrote, “It was he (Christ) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Our purpose as a part of the Body of Christ at St. James Anglican Church is to prepare God’s people for works of service. Again, there are many opportunities to serve the Body of Christ here at St. James.

Brothers and sisters, as we embark on the expansion of our facilities, we will need more people to become involved in the ministries of our congregation. As our church grows, we will need more people to meet the needs of those coming aboard. Some of you may be called to serve for a season, some for longer periods of time. Whatever the duration, now is the time to step forward. The harvest is plentiful but the laborers few. If this congregation is going to thrive and grow, we will need those who are part of it to pitch in. Peruse the list. If you feel God calling to something that is not on the list, please let me know and we can talk about your ministry ideas. As a people who claim to be biblical in orientation, let’s remember two lines from St. James’s letter. “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” And, “Faith without works is dead.” I hope and pray these two principles guide our way forward in the days to come.

Blessings,

A Message from Our Pastor

Last week, I had the privilege, along with several other members of the congregation’s leadership, to meet The Most Reverend Gregory Venables, Primate of the Southern Cone and Bishop of Argentina. St. James Anglican Church is a proud member of the Diocese of Argentina and privileged to have Archbishop Venables as our bishop. During the meeting, the Archbishop mentioned four things he wants St. James to concentrate on in the near future. None of these things are earth shattering. They are all things an active growing church committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ should be doing.

First, prayer. We need to meet together to pray. We need to sponsor and participate in concerts of prayer. Prayer is our life line to the One who gives us life. It is what strengthens and sustains us. Prayer is more than just saying a few selected readings from the Book of Common Prayer on Sunday or grace at meals. Prayer is an intention effort to come into the presence of God almighty. St. James will be a house of prayer.

Second, worship. In the words of Archbishop Venables, "Just proclaim it. Just proclaim Jesus as Lord. You have got to do it!" That is one goal of worship to proclaim. Another goal is - again - to enter into the presence of God. We do these through the Eucharist where we proclaim the New Covenant established by Jesus as we celebrate his death and resurrection. It is only through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus that we are able to enter into the presence of God. Thus, worship is central and essential to our being a community of faith.

Third, teach the Word. We need to be searching the Scripture in whole and in part. It is the Word written, the Bible, and the Word made flesh, Jesus, that we learn who God is and what he expects from our relationship with him. There is a need to be right with him and this accountability rests on the divinity of Christ and the centrality of the Cross. Without those, we are lost. We are fighting against so many other voices. We need to read the Bible, know the story of scripture. We need to know in order to have our minds renewed. This will alleviate any confusion. The Bible is God’s love letter to us and we need to know what it says and why!

Fourth, and lastly, fellowship. We need to teach people to fellowship. We need to do things together. St. James is very good at this. But, in an increasingly individualistic society, we tend to shun the company of others. Many are far from family and friends. The Church needs to be that place of safety and nurture that can only be accomplished through fellowship. That is the meaning of the word “community.” We are held together by a common union, community, and that is our faith in Jesus Christ.

We are pleased to be under the authority of the Diocese of Argentina. Yet, in the Anglican Communion or out, this is not “our” church, because it belongs to Jesus Christ. And the four things listed above St. James would be doing no matter what. Our motto, “Biblically Correct, Not Politically Correct”, prohibits us from acting any other way. Thanks be to God.
